I rearrange the pallu of my saree, trying to make sure everything is in the right place. I'm already starting to think that it was a mistake to wear it, but I rarely get a chance to and this felt like it was the perfect reason to.

"Hey, sorry I'm late," Layla says, hurrying over to me wearing a form-fitting bandage dress with cut-outs.

"You look good," I say.

"Thanks, you too. I can't believe this is actually happening." She lets out a happy sigh. "I never thought I'd be the head of GhoulSoc, or that we'd be able to have anything as normal as an end-of-term dinner. Though it's no end-of-year ball."

"We can have a table at that too," I point out. "I think they're starting to sell tickets after the holidays."

"We should definitely sort that out."

I nod. "But first, we should go see what the union's done with the space. I haven't actually had a chance to see it yet." Despite being part of the organising committee for this particular dinner, I haven't had a chance to see the inside of the Student Union building dressed up for a fancy event.

Layla heads inside and I follow behind, letting out a small gasp as I step inside the large room. A dozen tables fill the back of the room with crisp white tablecloths and fancy place settings. Above each is a printed sheet of card bearing the society who has booked the table and it makes me smile to see them all.

"Okay, this is very cool," Layla says. "I'm going to get a drink, do you want one?" She gestures to the bar that looks far fancier than its counterpart downstairs. Though that's probably because it isn't getting used nightly by dozens of students.

"Just a sparkling water, thanks."

"Nothing stronger?"

"I'm pacing myself." Which is probably a good idea, my hangover after the other night with Bernie and her flat was harsher than any I've ever experienced before, and I don't want to be that drunk when I encounter Cyprus again.

"All right, one sparkling water coming up. Are you going to push the boat out and have some lemon in it?"

"And ice."

Layla nods and disappears off to the bar where she seems to start flirting with the bartender.

She reappears a few minutes later and hands me the sparkling water and hands it to me.

"I think people are starting to arrive," she says, nodding to the door.

"I guess it's time to have fun then," I respond.

"Mmhmm, I'm glad that the head of NecroSoc is the one who said they'd watch over everything, we just get to enjoy the evening."

"How did we manage that one again?" I ask.

"We waited until someone else made the suggestion and volunteered," she responds. "Though I don't think it'll work forever."

"If there's another one, I guess we'll take our turn." And I won't mind doing it. So long as this all goes well.

"Ah, true. Oh, there's Kristoff, I'm going to go say hi," she says, her eyes zoning in on someone who has just walked in.
